The Kansas City Film Critics Circle Policy
Regarding Screenings and Opening-Day Reviews

The members of the Kansas City Film Critics Circle have grown increasingly concerned
about the scheduling of press screenings for major studio releases.  In response, the
following policy will be implemented, beginning August 1st, 2007:

-         Any films not screened in advance for critics will not be reviewed by any KCFCC
member, nor will such films be covered through publicity-generating features or promotional
materials.  This includes late reviews and wire service pieces.  It does
not include
legitimate news stories dealing with issues surrounding a film.

-         Advance screenings held less than 24 hours before a film’s opening will only be
covered by KCFCC members who are still able to provide a review on opening day.  In
practical terms, this means nothing later than Wednesday evening screenings for Friday
openings.  Members who are able to make their deadlines in spite of late screenings are
requested (but not required) to refuse to cover such films as a show of support for their
colleagues.

-         The above policy also applies to films screened only for a small, handpicked group of
KCFCC members.  Anyone not included in that group will not cover the film in question;
screening invitees are encouraged to refuse coverage as well.

-         Members who do not control the content of their outlets will strongly encourage their
editors, producers and/or website administrators to comply with this policy.

-  This policy does not apply to independent and "art" films, which may be unavailable for
review for legitimate reasons, but to major studio releases which
could be screened in a
timely manner.

- All members are expected to follow studio guidelines regarding opening-day reviews.
Any critic who reviews a film before its official opening date, without express permission
from a studio representative, may be subject to suspension or expulsion from the KCFCC.

We understand that screening access is nearly always dictated by the studios, and local
representatives have little control over these decisions.  Our frustration is directed at the
studios themselves, not at those who must enforce their rules.  We hope to continue our
positive relationship with the individuals who work with us at the local level, while improving
the overall situation.
